A Prediction Market Participant Earned $436,000 on Bets on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of NicolĂ¡s Maduro just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.
Sudden Shift in Wagers
Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion rose in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.
A particular user, which joined the platform last month and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market Signals Before News Break
Trading information shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.
But the odds had increased to over 10% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the early hours of the next day, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity just before the official statement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.
A small number of other platform users also profited large payouts from predicting the capture.
Legal Questions Emerges
Politicians are growing concerned.
A new rule presented on the start of the week would prevent federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Market Background
Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to predict everything from elections to politics.
The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.
An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
